The Money Management Program

The Money Management Program is a statewide program administered locally by BayPath Elder Services, Inc. since 1991. BayPath recruits and trains volunteers to assist low-income elders manage their money. The Money Management Program helps elders 60 and over with their day-to-day finances. An elder does not have to be a BayPath client to be eligible for the Money Management Program. The Money Management Program is sponsored in part by AARP's Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Mass Home Care Association, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and contributions from local business and individuals.

Services Provided by the Program

Bill Payer volunteers sort and read mail, organize and pay bills, review and reconcile monthly bank statements, write checks, and balance checkbooks as well as assist with day-to-day financial problems such as credit card debt, tax difficulties, and financial exploitation.

Representative Payee volunteers have authority to sign checks. These volunteers are appointed by the Social Security Administration, with the consent of a physician, for elders who are deemed incapable of managing their own finances.

Money Management Volunteers

BayPath Elder Services, Inc. carefully screens and trains volunteers. Once a volunteer has been accepted into the program, he or she is matched with an elder who needs assistance. All client accounts are insured through the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The client/volunteer relationship is held in strict confidence, and the clients maintain total control of their finances. BayPath provides ongoing supervision and in-service training sessions. Money manager volunteers typically have one or two clients and agree to a minimum one-year renewable commitment. Volunteers not only provide valuable assitance in day-to-day finances but also companionship to elders who are often isolated.
