BayPath's LGBT Initiative has been visiting various Councils on Aging, offering our new FREE program: an LGBTQ & A

This is simply the creation of a safe space for questions for an hour or two, wherein grandparents and other seniors can feel comfortable asking about unfamiliar pronouns or how best to support and affirm an LGBTQ+ loved one.

BayPath Elder Services, Inc.’s mission is to be a trusted partner in providing an array of services and programs to older adults, caregivers and persons with disabilities to support their independence and dignity.

As part of that mission, BayPath strives to provide the very best information, resources and supports to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) older adults and their allies living in MetroWest.

In 2017 and again in 2019, BayPath received a grants from the MetroWest Health Foundation to help build a sustainable relationship with the MetroWest LGBT older adult community in order to improve access to LGBT inclusive and informed health, mental health, and other information, resources, and services.

The resulting LGBT Initiative seeks to provide outreach to LGBT older adults, families and caregivers, community agencies, allies, businesses and individuals in order to establish BayPath as an LGBT informed and inclusive place to find support, information and resources for health and well-being.

Coffee & Celebration
LGBT seniors face the typical challenges of aging; however, because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity they are at higher risk for abuse, isolation, discrimination and exploitation.

Fearful of mistreatment, LGBT seniors are five times less likely to access services than non-LGBT seniors. Moreover, many of these LGBT seniors are estranged from their family of origin, and do not have children, so they are facing the challenges of aging without supports that many people take for granted.

BayPath's LGBT Initiative has staff available to answer questions, provide information and referrals, and offer programs and events to LGBT older adults, their family members, and local professionals in MetroWest.

LGBT Elders Cultural Competency Training
This training provides employees, volunteers, and community professionals with the tools they need to compassionately work with the growing numbers of LGBT older adults. Any and all questions are welcomed by our trainers, in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

As of spring of 2019, we are very pleased that more than 80 BayPath Elder Services staff members have attended our LGBT Elders Cultural Competency Training. We remain committed to providing this training, mandatory for all staff, to ensure that BayPath provides welcoming, informed, and thoughtful care for LGBT elders who contact us seeking support and/or services.

As part of our commitment to creating safe spaces and understanding, BayPath also offers our LGBT Elders Cultural Competency Training to groups and organizations throughout the MetroWest area. (Recently we have held this training, and subsequent discussions, with Seniors Helping Seniors and Thrive.)
